Completion Requirements
The Wisconsin Department of Commerce has a very strict pre-approval process for all continuing education products.

Renewal Dates
Renewal occurs June 30 biennially, however all continuing education for that renewal cycle must be fulfilled by March 30.
A notice of renewal will be mailed by the department to the certification holder at least 30 days prior to the expiration date. Failure to receive a notice for renewal will not be considered as an excuse or good cause for failure to renew prior to the expiration.

Special Designations or Stipulations:
A person may apply to renew his or her certification provided an application, certification fee and evidence of all renewal qualifications, if any, are submitted to the department prior to the expiration date.
A persona may apply to renew his or her certification within 6 months after expiration of the credential, provided an application fee accompanies the renewal application.
A person who holds a certification as a certified UDC – plumbing inspector may apply to the department for waiver of the continuing education requirements under subd. 1. on the grounds of prolonged illness or disability or similar circumstances. Each application for waiver will be considered individually on its merits by the department.

Applicable Course of Study:
Continuing education credits should enhance the skills, knowledge, and ability necessary to perform the function of the license or certification.
Only courses, programs and seminars approved in writing by the department may be used for credit to fulfill continuing education requirements.
A course may teach the following:
(1) Codes and national technical standards specific to the licenses or certifications.
(2) Codes and national technical standards related to the job descriptions for the licenses or certifications.
(3) Codes and technical standards related to an industry.
(4) Math skills related to the license or certification exam or job description for the license or certification. This is not basic math, but rather calculations and math needed to perform under a license or certification.
(5) Use of specific technical software used to design or perform responsibilities or activities.
A technical course may:
(1) Focus on work included under a license or certification.
(2) Relate to work performed under a license or certification.
(3) Concern new products and practices related to a license or certification.
A trade show may be related to the industry of a license and certification. A maximum of 1-hour credit will be awarded for trade shows.
A course may relate to the training or supervisory responsibilities that are necessary or required under a license or certification.
Service on a division advisory code council or committee may be used for continuing education credit.
Attending trade safety courses related to federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration obligations and requirements under CFR Part 1926 (Construction Site Safety).
American Red Cross first aid training or equivalent.
Evaluated correspondence courses can be accepted for continuing education credit.
Internet courses can be approved.
Credit will be given for attending the same course twice. The value of attending the same course with a different audience that asks different questions, thus leading the discussion down different paths, is recognized.
Proof of Compliance:
The individual organization which had obtained the course, program or seminar approval shall maintain an attendance of those individuals who have attended and completed the course, program or seminar. The attendance record shall include all of the following:
(1) The course name.
(2) The course identification number assigned by the department.
(3) The date or dates the course was held or completed.
(4) The name of each attendee.
(5) The name of each license, certification or registration held by the attendee for which the course applies.
(6) The license, certification or registration number assigned by the department of each attendee.
A copy of the attendance record shall be forwarded by the person or organization which had obtained the course, program or seminar approval to the department within 14 calendar days after completion of the course or program.
Each license, certification or registration holder shall retain evidence of compliance with continuing education requirements throughout the license, certification or registration period for which continuing education credit was required for renewal of the license, certification or registration.
The department shall accept as evidence of compliance original or copies of documents, certified by the individual or organization providing the course, program or seminar, indicating attendance and completion of the continuing education credit.
The department may require a license, certification or registration holder to submit evidence of compliance for the continuing education credit which was required to renew the license, certification, or registration.
Non-Compliance Penalties:
An individual who fails to renew his or her certification within 6 months after the expiration date shall be required to comply with and complete appropriate requirements for obtaining the certification initially, including the passing of a certification examination, if required.
Disallowed Credits:
No credit will be given for attending a course prior to course approval except via the petition for variance process.
