Completion Requirements
The New Mexico Board of Interior Designers has a very strict pre-approval process for continuing education products.

Applicable Course Study
Education instruction or training in interior design or courses of study is defined as formal programs of learning which build upon the basic knowledge of interior design. Such programs are intended to meet the following criteria:
(1) Enhance the quality of technical knowledge.
(2) Enhance overall comprehensive professional education.
(3) Provide knowledge in new technical areas.
(4) Provide practical applications on issues which impact the public health, safety and welfare.
Unless otherwise approved by the board, subjects or courses of study accepted for the purposes of this rule shall be limited to the following:
(1) Enhance the quality of technical knowledge.
(a) Health & Safety Planning
(b) Life Safety Requirements
(c) Barrier Free Requirements
(d) Codes and Ordinances
(e) Interior Products and Finishes
(2) Business
(a) Contracts and Agreements
(b) Accounting
(c) Business Law
(d) Project Management
(e) Ethics
(3) Design
(a) Computer Aided Drafting & Design (CADD)
(b) Space Planning and Programming
(c) Product Performance
(d) Documents and Specs
(e) Advancement in Specialized Fields
(f) Interior Detailing
(g) Historical Preservation

Additional Methods of Obtaining CE Requirements: Unless otherwise approved by the board and subject to the formalities and further requirements of this rule, additional methods of learning shall be limited to the following:
(1) Institutions of higher education,
(2) Professional associations,
(3) Education organizations,
(4) Other qualified individual providers.
(5) Formal correspondence or other individual study programs, and
(6) Documented professional or civic projects (eg. Grant projects, out of country studies, exhibition design, etc.) which fulfill some aspect of the criteria required. Credits for these projects will only be granted on the basis of sufficient documentation. Although pre-approved is not mandatory, it is highly recommended.
It is the responsibility of the attendee to provide sufficient documentation to the board to prove that the alternative method of obtaining CEU credit meets the criteria in Part 6, Sections 8.2, 8.3.1, and 8.4.2.2. It is also the responsibility of the attendee to provide proof of attendance.
Although pre-approval of alternate methods of obtaining CEU credit is not mandatory, it is highly recommended.
In order for a licensee to receive credit for programs of learning, as defined above, the following formalities and further requirements must be met:
(1) Higher education credit course shall be credited for continuing education purposes at the rate of fifteen (15) hours for each semester or credit hour. A copy of institution course completion must be submitted as proof of compliance.
(2) Higher non-credit courses shall be credited for continuing education purposes equivalent to the actual number of classroom hours. A copy of institution course completion must be submitted as proof of compliance.
(3) Continuing professional education credit for instructing a higher education course shall be twice the credit which would have been granted for the first presentation of a specific course or program, the same credit as the credit granted a participant for the second presentation and none thereafter.
Proof of Compliance
It is the responsibility of the attendee to provide sufficient documentation to the board to prove that the alternative method of obtaining CEU credit meets the criteria in Part 6, Sections 8.2, 8.3.1, and 8.4.2.2 It is also the responsibility of the attendee to provide proof of attendance.
A copy of institution course completion must be submitted as proof of compliance for higher education credit and non-credit courses.
Interior Designers shall submit to the board with their renewal application and fee, the required proof of attendance documentation of board-approved continuing education completed during the applicable renewal period. The board office shall verify credit hours earned prior to renewing the license.

Disallowed Credits
Participation in professional and civic activities (eg. Professional association membership or membership in civic organizations, etc.) will not be considered as a substitute for continuing education courses.
No continuing professional education credit shall be permitted for attending interior design courses which do not build upon the basic knowledge of interior design.
